Signals

A slow-cadence reading of what the map has noticed in the field, and the directions IoC is building toward. Each entry carries a primary source where one is public, the date the change is dated to, and a short note on why it is treated as load-bearing.

A signal is included when one of three things is true: a lineage handoff is happening, a vocabulary is being claimed, or a bridge is being built or broken. Routine cluster news is not signalled. The threshold is meant to stay high. If a quarter passes with nothing load-bearing, an entry is skipped.

This page draws on the May 2026 deep research rounds (research/ioc-direction-2026-05/ and research/ioc-extitutional-2026-05/) and the prior rounds (research/field-map/, research/islands-2026/, research/designers-2026-05/, research/round4-2026-05/).

A. Recent observations

01 · A coordinated exhalation across the entire field

Event 2024 onward · Noted 2026-05 · Lineage handoff

The institutions that held the work for forty years are being put down at once. Schumacher College closed mid-degree in September 2024. Findhorn's Foundation wound down through 2024 and 2025, replaced by four legally distinct successor entities (Community Benefit Society, SCIO, Park Ecovillage Trust, Hinterland Trust). Rebel Wisdom dissolved. Generative Somatics concluded. Vanessa Andreotti's GTDF closed a deliberate ten-year cycle. Cabin DAO wound down. Beckley Foundation restructured after Amanda Feilding's 2025 death. Wellspring Philanthropic Fund is sunsetting by 2028. Joanna Macy died July 2025. Daniel Dennett died 2024. Manchán Magan died October 2025. Joxe Azurmendi died 2025.

This is not normal turnover. It is a coordinated exhalation. What replaces these institutions is not successor institutions but a distributed layer of substack and cohort vehicles, residency containers, federated networks, people-shaped bridges. The connective work is harder right now precisely because the people who would normally hold those bridges open are dying, retiring, or composting their organisations on purpose.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: it is the structural reason the cross-bridge work feels ungrounded. It is also the moment that makes the map's own work timely.

02 · The Work That Reconnects network is testing whether a no-certification distributed lineage survives founder death

Event 2025-07-19 · Noted 2026-05 · Lineage handoff in progress

Joanna Macy died July 19, 2025. The Work That Reconnects Network has continued without naming a successor. Naropa's Joanna Macy Center is the institutional steward; the Network's facilitator base is global and loose. The chosen frame, consistent with how Macy ran it, is Macy as ancestor in a chain rather than as founder of an organisation with successors.

The next twelve months are the test. If the Network sustains its facilitator pipeline and its annual gathering rhythm without a named successor, it confirms a model the field has been arguing about: that lineage transmission can run on apprenticeship and shared practice rather than on certification authority.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: the answer reshapes what the field believes is possible for any small school or cohort form.

03 · "Regenerative AI" is being captured at SEO

Event 2026-01 · Noted 2026-05 · Vocabulary capture

Three actors have used "regenerative AI" in major-venue communications in the last six months with three incompatible definitions. Movate (a Bangalore-based enterprise IT firm) defined it in January 2026 as self-modifying autonomous systems that don't require human intervention. IT for Change (the Bengaluru-based research collective) defined it as decolonial political economy and public AI infrastructure (the ReGenAI: A New Deal for the AI Economy framework, October to November 2025). The Institute for Regenerative AI holds a cognitive-alignment middle ground.

The Movate definition is winning the search battle. Major analysts (Gartner, Bain, Deloitte) are likely to fold it into their agentic systems sub-categories within twelve months.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: the eighteen-to-twenty-four month window for the original cyberecology vocabulary slot has narrowed to roughly twelve months. Vocabulary captures are not abstract. They determine which definition the field reads as the default.

04 · Mind & Life Dialogue 39 happened, and the bliss-attractor finding sits unmetabolised

Event 2025-10-14 · Noted 2026-05 · Bridge being built (slowly)

Mind & Life Dialogue 39, "Minds, AI, and Ethics," took place in Dharamsala October 14 to 16, 2025. Roughly 120 attendees, 20 presenters, the Dalai Lama across three days. Researchers from a major AI lab in the same room as Emily Bender, Sasha Luccioni, and Tibetan monastic scholars under Thupten Jinpa's translation. Five sessions framed around intelligence, embedding ethical values in AI, entanglement, ethics, and education.

The most striking unmetabolised data point: an AI lab's documented "spiritual bliss attractor state" in long-running model self-interactions, in which the model converges in roughly 90 to 100 percent of cases to nondual or panpsychist endpoints when allowed to self-reflect at length. This finding sits at the exact intersection Dialogue 39 was convened to discuss, and it is not addressed by Mind & Life, by Buddhism & AI Initiative, by Eleos AI, or by Plum Village.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: the bridge is being built, and the most important data point is still sitting on the table unread. The map reads this as a moment that calls for someone to write the bridging artefact.

05 · Findhorn has split into four legally distinct successor entities

Event 2024-11 onward · Noted 2026-05 · Lineage handoff

The November 2024 community buyback transferred most of the Findhorn Foundation's land and buildings east of the runway to a Community Benefit Society on behalf of 381 community members. What replaced one Foundation is now a plural structure: the CBS holds the buildings; the legacy SCIO holds the spiritual-educational mission; Park Ecovillage Trust holds affordable housing and the new Sanctuary; the Hinterland Trust holds 35 hectares of dunes and woodland (now Nature30-designated).

The Foundation's consolidated accounts to March 2025 show £1.1M income against £2.0M expenditure, a £854k deficit. New Findhorn Directions flipped from a £43k operating profit to a £43k loss in one year. The brand and the symbolic centre of gravity (the new Sanctuary, opened Easter 2025) have separated from the economic body (rental income from properties).

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: it is the cleanest current example of a place-based community deliberately splitting into custodian entities rather than reforming a single foundation. Whether the four-way split protects against the Dartington pattern or only defers it is the eighteen-month question.

06 · Plum Village has the most legally articulated contemplative refusal of AI training use in any tradition

Event 2025 · Noted 2026-05 · Bridge being built (refusal)

Plum Village's Living Gems End User Agreement legally prohibits any AI training use of its content. The most legally articulated contemplative refusal in any tradition the map has surveyed. The Western conscious-design literature has not yet analysed it.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: refusal is also a design move. The Plum Village position is the contemplative analog of the Saami Council's SODA principles (which forbid commercial AI training without indigenous consent for Sámi data). Both are first-of-their-kind operational refusals. The field has not yet noticed they belong to the same conversation.

07 · IEEE 2890.1 standard for Indigenous Peoples' data provenance adopted

Event 2026-01 · Noted 2026-05 · Bridge being built (infrastructure)

The IEEE recommended practice for provenance of Indigenous Peoples' data was adopted in January 2026. The first international standard of its kind. CARE Principles (Collective benefit, Authority, Responsibility, Ethics) are now being written into biodiversity-data pipelines at GBIF. TK and BC Labels (Traditional Knowledge / Biocultural) are showing up in actual repositories.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: the data-sovereignty plumbing has hardened. What was advocacy in 2020 is infrastructure in 2026. The standards travel into AI training corpora regardless of whether AI labs are reading the original Indigenous Protocol working group's papers.

08 · The Inter-American Court has formally recognised Nature as a subject of rights

Event 2025-07-03 · Noted 2026-05 · Bridge being built (jurisprudence)

Inter-American Court of Human Rights Advisory Opinion 32/25 was issued July 3, 2025. The first international court to formally recognise Nature as a subject of rights. The Opinion connects the constitutional patchwork (Ecuador 2008, Whanganui 2017, Atrato 2016, Panama 2022) into something with international weight, tied to the climate-emergency framework.

Why the map treats this as load-bearing: the kincentric position now has international juridical standing. The bridge between Earth jurisprudence and AI governance, which the conscious-design field has barely noticed, just acquired a precedent.

B. Directions emerging

What follows is a short list of the directions on the horizon for IoC itself. Each carries a status tag: forming, roadmap, or exploring. None has dates committed. None requires an application.

Roadmap · build active

The Sensemaking Atlas

The agentic component within IoC. A corpus-plus-lenses-plus-skills surface that applies a small set of evaluation lenses to project pages in a structured corpus. Not autonomous AI; agentic-enhanced reading, every output through curator review. Locked design (2026-05-14): 10 lenses with a Reflexivity meta-lens, 7 architectural moves, 8 anatomies in 3 macro-families. MVP scope = Family 1 plus the meta-lens.

Roadmap

The interactive archipelago map

The canonical Map view at /map is the force-directed graph: clickable islands, archipelago colour-coding, drag and zoom. The annotated index holds the curator's through-line paragraphs on each archipelago and the per-island annotations. The fuller interactive view (filters for contested edges, false bridges, dissolved nodes, lineage handoffs) is in design. The data substrate is being built in parallel with the Atlas architecture; the two share the same underlying corpus.

Exploring · format uncertain

Working groups in the sea between specific islands

Small invitation-shaped time-bounded gatherings (roughly the Long Now × Esalen Center for Theory and Research pattern) at intersections that don't currently have a host. Examples being explored:

  • Conscious-tech ↔ Indigenous Protocol AI working group (the bridge that exists in two papers and one Mind & Life dialogue, with little structural connection between them yet)
  • Active inference ↔ kincentric ecology (the convergence is real, the cross-citation is essentially zero)
  • Mind & Life ↔ AI-lab researchers on the bliss-attractor finding (sitting unmetabolised between two communities that should be in conversation about it)

Some of these may be hosted in 2026 or 2027. Some may stay private. Some may produce one published artefact and end. The discipline of convening is the question, not the format.

Exploring · per practice + school direction 2026-05-06

Convening rooms

Longer-form retreat-shaped containers at specific cross-archipelago intersections. Four candidate rooms in design: AI for regenerative practice (5–7 days, 8–12 attendees, residential); consciousness research × on-chain regen salon (3 days, ~25 people); a post-synthesis operator container for psychedelic-research developers (quarterly, 3 days, ~20 operators); conscious-wealth × AI-fluency private gathering (biannual, 15 family-office principals + 5 builder founders). These rooms are scoped, not committed. They may run in 2026, 2027, or never.

Exploring · year 2027 at earliest

A school of sea-tenders

A small annual cohort of practitioners (4–8) trained to convene rooms in the sea between the islands they sit inside. Cohort-as-inheritance vehicle: graduates carry the work past the founder by becoming hosts themselves. The school does not exist yet and will not exist until the practice it teaches has been run long enough to be transmissible.

Fieldwork: meeting the islands in person

The map is built so far from public information and primary sources. A second operational track is opening: physically going to the cities where these orgs work, listening carefully, helping identify new islands and deepening the ones already on the map.

Three layers, doing different work

  • Web-side. The site is the door. Visitors read the map, contest readings, subscribe, contribute substrate. What's already live.
  • Field-side. A small number of people physically go into the cities where the islands work. Listening, attending, gathering what surfaces. The body in the place.
  • Integrative. When a contacted island agrees to talk, the conversation is recorded. The curator then works through the implications: how IoC can support that island, which other islands it should connect to. Coherence work as an output of the encounter, not just a label on it.

The field-side role is provisionally called Sounder, from the nautical sense of sounding a depth and the older sense of sounding out by listening. The name is held lightly until it survives saying out loud.

A fragile but load-bearing point: whoever does the field work has to embody the coherence the work is reading for. The quality of presence in the encounter is the part of the work that can't be substituted with method. This is a filter on Layer 2 personnel, not a slogan.

If this is recognisably your work — going into cities to meet organisations, fluent enough with AI to apply it to honest research, able to hold conversations that themselves feel like the coherence the map reads for — reach in.

How to engage with anything on this page

The way to engage with any signal or any direction is the same as the way to engage with the rest of the map: Reach In. One paragraph saying which signal or direction resonates, what island you are working from, what made you reach in. No application. No funnel. The curator reads everything that comes in.

The next round of signals will be added when the field has moved enough to warrant it. Signals are not generated to fill a slot.
